If you’re from Cape Town you will have noticed that over the past week or so there has been a certain chill in the air early in the mornings and evenings… certainly the sun is rising later and setting sooner which means Winter is on it’s way! So to celebrate the last few days of summer I decided to pay a visit to the Atlantic Seaboard for sundowners with a friend last week at one of the newest chill out spots overlooking Camps Bay beach… Chinchilla – a gorgeous space set high above the main drag on the Camps Bay strip. The rooftop bar has amazing views over the beach, the Atlantic ocean and Lions Head.

We arrived (after some traffic) just after 6pm and enjoyed a quick walk along the seafront before heading up to chill out at Chinchilla Rooftop Bar.

As we entered I was taken with the lush greenery, bright colours and the golden afternoon light that welcomed us warmly. The decor has a touch of Zanzibar about it with it’s woven basket lampshades and draped curtains.

The place oozes atmosphere with its’ relaxed dining spaces and comfortable couches. This is exactly the spot you want to be to watch the sun set on a summer’s evening. We visited mid-week, but on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays they host live DJ sets when their resident international DJs Tess Prins and Charles Webster hit the decks from late afternoon until sunset.

The bar area is well stocked and the cocktail menu extensive so we started our evening with cocktail. I tried the signature Vanilla, Orange, Pomegranate Margarita made with Don Julio tequila, Orange Vanilla Infused Martini Bianco, Fresh Lime and Pomegranate Juice. Obviously we couldn’t just have one so we opted to try a Mojito and a Pina Colada too!

The menu features café classics and contemporary dishes. Bistro-style bites have been created to suit Chinchilla’s unique location. Expect light meals, sandwiches and fresh favourites.

There is a selection of twelve side dishes and eleven main dishes such as chicken paillard, steak bearnaise and tuna nicoise. I’d heard great things about the Oysters (R80 for 3) but we opted to try the Prawn Cocktail starter (R130) and the Caprese Salad (R80) followed by more Prawns for mains drenched in garlic butter with a sprinkle of chilli and sea salt (who can resist?) My Tuna Nicoise with new baby potatoes, tomatoes, olives and radishes (R200) wasn’t my favourite and I think next time I’ll try the Beef Burger (R120) instead!

This exclusive rooftop venue is the first of its kind in Camps Bay and makes for a special spot to enjoy sundowners with a great view and a great vibe. The food presentation and quality wasn’t quite what I was anticipating but the cocktails couldn’t be faulted! Head here to celebrate the last days of summer…
