This family-friendly farmers’ market is suitable for all ages. With a focus on organic produce, craft goods and selected foodie finds, Lavender Blue Market is a wonderful market to explore.
Add to that a pleasant atmosphere, great play area, ample outdoor space and excellent food and drink options – and you have the perfect family experience.

Stop by Emerald Vale Brewery
Emerald Vale Brewery is a short distance from East London but it’s definitely worth the drive. Especially when you factor in a unique craft beer experience, Wild Coast hospitality and excellent indoor- and outdoor-kids’ play facilities.
Their family-friendly restaurant offers wholesome, homemade meals in a laid-back setting. It is also well-positioned, as it overlooks the brewery. This is handy if you wish to join a Emerald Vale brewery tour.

Emerald Vale Brewery is free to visit. However, brewery tours cost R85 per person and must be booked in advanced.
The tour includes a tasting tray with four ales and runs for +/- 45 minutes.

If you dare, visit the fascinating Venom Pit Snake Park. Here, families can enjoy learning about a variety of different snakes. And, if you’re brave enough, you can even touch a snake or two!
Found some 10 kilometres outside East London, Venom Pit Snake Park is one of Africa’s largest snake parks. Although it is home to some of the world’s deadliest snakes, great care is taken to educate the public, while looking after these amazing, fear-inducing inhabitants.

Visit the East London Museum
Another unmissable local attraction, and a favourite of my own childhood, is the East London Museum. First established in 1921, this amazing natural- and cultural-history museum is considered to be one of the best in South Africa.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy seeing a unique range of exhibits. Including the type specimen of the coelacanth, along with an extensive collection of Xhosa beadwork.
There are also beautiful animal- and bird-exhibits and it is a good, interesting museum to explore with kids.
