The Best Family Restaurants Southern Suburbs & South Peninsula

Today I’m sharing another list of the best family restaurants in the Southern Suburbs and South Peninsula. All of these family-friendly restaurants come recommended by parents – either myself or my readers – so I hope you will find this list useful when trying to choose a spot to enjoy a meal out with your family…

Here are my favourite family restaurants in the Southern Suburbs and South Peninsula of Cape Town (in no particular order)….

Southern Suburbs

The Clubhouse

This is one of my personal favourites at the moment – a family-friendly eatery that both parents and kids LOVE. The food is delicious, generous and reasonably priced. We’ve only ever had good meals here. PLUS The Clubhouse runs regular specials, such as kids eating for free until 7pm! Bonus. Surrounded by cricket fields there is ample space for kids to run and play soccer, cricket, rugby or chasing games, making this a great day time venue but with sunset only around 8 in summer, an early evening meal allows them plenty of time to play (provided the wind has dropped)!

Claremont Cricket Club, Constantia Sports Complex, Constantia

Col’Cacchio

Westlake Business Park near Tokai has a few options that all share an amazing kids jungle gym and play area. Col’Cacchio is our preferred option serving traditional Italian pizza’s and pastas. The latest addition is in fact a Banting menu which will go down well with parents of the Southern Suburbs taking part in this diet!

The Gardeners Cottage

This little eatery in Newlands is situated in the Montebello Design Centre and is a great spot for a light lunch with a friend during the school holidays. A little tractor and a few stumps to climb on is located next to the outdoor seating area but the real gem is exploring the rest of the Design Centre after your meal – the Nursery Greenhouse is beautiful!

Jonkershuis

This beautifully located restaurant is always filled with families for long lazy lunches under the oak trees on weekends! The lawns are lovey for kids to run around on and the view across the vineyards to the Hottentots Holland Mountains and False Bay can’t be beat!

Little Stream Restaurant

One of my favourite hidden gems in the Southern Suburbs is situated up the top of Klein Constantia Road in Constantia. It is a lovely setting for kids to explore, there is a small jungle gym, lots of trees, secret pathways and down at the bottom of the garden, a few swings and little stream! It’s a real paradise for kids to run around and experience freedom and nature while parents enjoy a light lunch or tasty treat for tea.

Rhodes Memorial

The Rhodes Memorial Tea Room and Restaurant has been around for YEARS. I recall going there as a child myself on our visits down to Cape Town to see my gran! In recent years they have revamped slightly and now in addition to their great food and incredible view they also have a shady, enclosed playground equipped with a jungle gym, swings and sand pit, ideal to keep youngsters entertained for a while!

Open Door

Open Door is situated on the historic Constantia Uitsig farm, which dates back to 1685 when Simon van der Stel was Commander of the Cape. The outside deck is child-friendly, and overlooks the adjacent fenced-in kiddies’ play area, where a wooden tractor, viewing deck with binoculars, swings, see-saws and a slide will keep them busy for hours.

In addition to the delightful play area, there’s a Bike Park across the way, which offers a fun escape for kids. Afterwards, explore more of the beautifully restored estate.

Blanko

Situated in The Alphen Hotel, this chic, all-day Italian eatery is surprisingly family-friendly!

Stylish child-friendly restaurants are not easy to find, but here you have a choice to sit in the gallery-like inside space, or on the outdoor terrace, which overlooks a central water feature and the gardens.

Sunday Funday is the perfect outing for city-dwelling folk seeking a relaxed-country vibe. With a secure play area, supervised by a qualified child minder, the kids are kept busy with face painting, interactive games, and other fun activities.

The Eatery Woodfire Grill

A neighbourhood establishment in Claremont that serves tasty food cooked on the open flame, this child-friendly spot in the heart of the southern suburbs has a secure deck with a fun jungle gym set up for the kids. The relaxed atmosphere allows parents and other patrons to relax while the kids play happily just a stone’s throw away.

With a good selection of craft beers on tap and a no corkage charge policy, parents can enjoy themselves while kids tuck into their amazing milkshake offerings – from salted caramel to an Oreo flavoured, they have well-crafted shakes to suit everyone.

The Eatery dishes up honest food made with top notch ingredients. It has a reputation for serving one of the better steaks in Cape Town. This is the perfect neighbourhood restaurant that has locals coming back regularly.

Think of Eatery Woodfired Grill the next time the kids have drawn on one too many walls, for a relaxed environment where both adults and children can enjoy themselves. This kid friendly establishment could be responsible for saving hundreds of marriages and small children’s lives!

Forresters Arms (or Forries)

A Southern Suburbs institution situated in the leafy suburb of Newlands. It is well known for Sunday carvery, providing joints of meat and seasonal vegetables. Take the kids too – Forries has safety approved swings, jungle gyms and slides that children are free to play on and use. The added bonus to the Forries kiddies section is that is a separate and contained area with most of the tables a stone’s throw away from the sand pit and jungle gym area. This ideal for parents who want to relax and enjoy food and drinks while their children are still in sight. Kids can also enjoy colouring books and fun puzzles provided by Forries. Forries is definitely one to add to the list of Kid Friendly Restaurants in Cape Town.

Octopus Garden

This is a spot I have yet to visit in the Southern Suburbs which is bizarre as we head down to St James beach often in summer. According to my readers it offer good food, a great outdoor play area AND good wine! A great idea might be to catch the train to St James, spend some time on the beach and then enjoy a bite to eat here before heading home! It’s def on my list of school holiday outing options!

Blue Water Cafe

Imhoff farm just outside of Kommetjie is a great destination for plenty of family-friendly fun! There are camel rides, a reptile park, a wonderful play area with an enormous slide, seesaw and grassy patch for running around PLUS the very popular Higgeldy Piggeldy Animal Farm and Petting Zoo. Blue Water Café is another one of my favourite spots and this might have something to do with the amazing view over the vlei to the Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain, Hout Bay and Noordhoek but it also has a lot to do with the Mediterranean-style meals on the menu!

The Red Herring

If it’s alfresco dining you’re after then the deck or garden areas at the Red Herring is the place to be. Relax and enjoy the view that stretches from Chapman’s Peak across to Kommetjie or, if you prefer, the restaurant offers a more intimate and cosy environment with a large fireplace.

There’s also a pub upstairs. Tuck into tapas or pizza, or join them for a roast on Sundays. It’s a relaxed family-friendly environment and there is a kids’ play area with a rustic jungle gym and rope swing. They also have kids’ pizza-making activities during the school holidays.
